Described below are the various advisory boards and committees on which the Muskegon
County Board of Commissioners makes citizen appointments. At the end of this summary there
is a link to the application form which you can download.
NOTICE OF APPLICATION
FOR CITIZEN APPOINTMENTS
The Muskegon County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications for appointments to various citizen advisory committees and boards. Interested applicants can obtain an application either by calling the County Administrator’s Office at 231.724.8883; or obtain an application from our website www.co.muskegon.mi.us by clicking on the link to the Board of Commissioners. Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee
The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee provides recommendations to the County Board
of Commissioners and reviews requests for use of accommodation tax funds. Term length is
3 years. Meetings are generally monthly on the 4th Tuesday at 9:15 AM, except for summer
months. No per diem is paid.
Airport Advisory Committee
The Airport Advisory Committee purpose is to allow for citizen input on various issues facing the
Airport, such as (but not limited to) expansion, funding, safety regulations, customer service,
education of the public on the advantages of a county owned airport, identification and
prioritization of future needs, and offering ideas for the marketing and the growth of the Airport.
Term length is two years after initial staggered appointments. Meetings as scheduled by the
Committee. No per diem is paid.
Board of Canvassers
The Board of Canvassers verifies election results, county-wide, checks ballots, signatures, etc.
Statute requires that membership represents both political parties and recommendations for
appointment come from Party Chairman. Term length is 4 years. Board meets according to
election schedule. A per diem of $35 plus mileage is paid.
Building Authority
The Building Authority is responsible for acquiring, furnishing, equipping, owning, improving,
enlarging, maintaining and operating buildings, structures, parking lots, recreational facilities and
necessary sites for public purposes. Term length is 3 years. Meetings are scheduled as needed.
No per diem is paid.
Citizens Review Committee/Housing
The Citizens Review Committee is response for ensuring that there is appropriate public input into the use of Community Development Block Grant funds through development of a Citizen Participation Plan, Consolidated Housing Plan and an Affirmative Fair Housing Marketing Plan. Term length is two years. Meetings are called as needed.
Jail/Juvenile Transition Center Citizens Review Committee JJTCC
The JJTCC will provide input to the Jail & Juvenile Transition Center Committee and County Administration regarding the identified need and design of a new Jail and Juvenile Transition Facility.
No per diem is paid.
Community Corrections Advisory Board
The Community Corrections Advisory Board oversees development of a comprehensive plan
for community corrections programming, provides policy guidance to the Board of
Commissioners and informs and educates the general public regarding the need for diversion
of non-violent offenders from confinement. Term length is 3 years. Meetings are generally
monthly on the 3rd Monday at 12:00 Noon. No per diem is paid.
Community Mental Health Services Board
The Community Mental Health Services Board develops a needs assessment plan, annual
budget, secures funds, approve and authorizes vendor contracts, reviews and evaluates quality
of services provided, appoints executive director. Meetings are generally monthly on the fourth
Friday at 8:00 AM. Term length is 3 years. A per diem of $35 plus mileage is paid.
Department of Human Services Board
The Department of Human Services Board oversees the operation of the Brookhaven Medical
Care Facility. Term length is 3 years. Meetings are generally the last Monday of the month. A
per diem of $50 is paid.
Foreign Trade Zone
The Foreign Trade Zone Board establishes, operates and maintains a physical and legal foreign
trade zone and develops agreements for foreign trade service operations within the zone. Term
length is 2 years. Meetings are generally quarterly, time and location varies. No per diem is
paid.
Lakeshore Coordinating Council
The Lakeshore Coordinating Council is a subcommittee of the Lakeshore Coordinating Board
which responsible for planning and coordination of programs and facilities which provide services
for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of individuals dependent upon drugs or alcohol.
Term length is 2 years. Meetings are generally monthly. A per diem of $35 plus .36 cents per
mile is paid.
Lakeshore Museum Board
The County Museum Board promotes the establishment, maintenance and continuance of a
historical and natural sciences museum, educational advancement of the public; acquires
specimens, relics, mementos, documents or other articles of interest. Term length is 3 years.
Meetings are generally monthly on the 4th Monday at 4:30 PM. No per diem is paid.
MSUE District Extension Council
This Council will give guidance and support for the local Extension effort. It will be engaged in
an ongoing process of identifying and prioritizing critical issues that fit within the MSUE mission
and four Institutes (Agriculture and Agribusiness, Children and Youth, Nutrition and Health, and
Greening Michigan.) Term length is 3 years, initial terms are staggered. The Council will meet
four times per year beginning in January.
Muskegon County Road Commission Board
The Muskegon County Road Commission Board is responsible for establishment, opening,
discontinuing, vacating, closing, altering, improvement, maintenance and use of public highways
and private roads; the condemnation of property and gravel thereof; and building, preservation
and repairing of bridges. Term length established at time of appointment. Meetings are
generally monthly on the 3rd Thursday at 10:00 AM. Members are salaried.

Solid Waste Planning Committee
The Solid Waste Planning Committee oversees the county solid waste plan and approves any
modification to landfill sites, new transfer stations or new landfill sites. The Committee consists
of 14 members. Term length is 2 years. No per diem is paid.
Veteran’s Advisory Committee
The Veteran’s Advisory Committee is responsible for the soldiers’ relief commission, and
processing of requests for burial assistance. Term length is 4 years. Meetings are generally
monthly on the 4th Wednesday at 2:00 PM. A per diem of $35 plus mileage is paid. Pursuant to Public Act 192 of 1953, please include a letter of support with your application from your local Veteran organization post.
White River Natural River Zoning Review Board
This Board was established by the Department of Natural Resources under the Natural Rivers
Part 305, 1994 PA 451 in order to guide development in a manner that will protect the natural
features of the river system. The review board is responsible for acting on requests for variances
and special use permits. The review board generally meets three times per year. No per diem
is paid.
MI Works-Workforce Development Board
This Board was established under the State of Michigan Workforce Investment Act for delivery
of workforce development programs and services designed to affect the skills of the workforce.
Term length is 3 years. Meetings are generally monthly. A per diem of $35 plus mileage is paid.
