About the Photos Above:
Western Avenue Photo's from the Collection of the Muskegon County Museum.
During the 1870s people traveled to Muskegon to work in the booming sawmills
and experience the joy of a rapidly growing town. By the 1960s, Muskegon
had witnessed the end of the lumbering era and the beginning of new
industries. For over a century, Muskegon has recreated itself, accepted
change, and remained hopeful for the future.
Muskegon County's first Court House was completed in 1870 and was destroyed
during the "Pine Street Fire," on May 16, 1891. The Court House in the top
photo was completed on October 3, 1893. The current Court House and Jail
was erected during the years of 1958 and 1959 and dedicated on May 18,
1960.
