Intensive Crisis Stabilization is another short-term alternative to inpatient hospitalization. Intensive crisis stabilization services are structured treatment and supported activities provided by a mental health crisis team in the person's home or in another community setting.

Extended Observation Beds (or 23-Stay Units) are used to stabilize a mental health emergency when a person needs to be in the hospital for only a short time. An extended observation bed allows hospital staff to observe and treat the person's condition for up to one day before they are discharged to another community-based outpatient service or admitted to the hospital.
