The Muskegon County Board of Commissioners seeks residents for appointments to boards and committees starting in August. Interested individuals can view committees and apply online year-round; applications are kept on file for one year. If a selected position becomes vacant, your application will be reviewed by the Board Chair.

The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee provides recommendations regarding tourism matters to the County Board of Commissioners and reviews requests for use of accommodation tax funds.

The Airport Advisory Committee meets monthly to allow for citizen input on various issues facing the airport, including:
- Customer service
- Education of the public on the advantages of a county-owned airport
- Expansion
- Funding
- Identification and prioritization of future needs
- Offering ideas for the marketing and the growth of the airport
- Safety regulations

Meetings are scheduled according to election schedule.
The Board of Canvassers is responsible for canvassing and certifying county-wide election results, as well as checking ballots, signatures, and conducting recounts. The state statute requires that membership on this board represents both political parties and that recommendations for appointment come from the Party Chairman.

The Building Authority is responsible for caring for public sites including; acquiring, furnishing, equipping, owning, improving, enlarging and maintaining and operating buildings, structures, parking lots, recreational facilities, and necessary sites for public purposes.

The Community Corrections Advisory Board (CCAB) was established in 1988 under Public Act 511 and was given the power to oversee development of a comprehensive plan in order to reduce the number of admissions to prison and the prison commitment rate of non-violent felony offenders, community corrections programming, policy guidance to the Board of Commissioners and informs and educates the general public regarding the need for diversion of non-violent offenders from confinement.

The HealthWest Board has the following responsibilities:
- Develops a needs assessment plan
- Develops annual budget
- Secures funds
- Approve and authorizes vendor contracts
- Reviews and evaluates quality of services provided

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month.
The Department of Health and Human Services Board and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are responsible for the administration of social service programs and the distribution of funds as appropriated by the State Legislature for public assistance grants. The DHHS Board is also responsible for discretionary fund allocations to community-based human service agencies.

The Foreign Trade Zone Board establishes, operates and maintains a physical and legal foreign trade zone and develops agreements for foreign trade service operations within the zone.

Meetings are held annually, in the month of May.
The Jury Board shall consist of three (3) qualified electors of the county appointed by the county board of commissioners on recommendation of the circuit judges of the 14th judicial circuit court with not more than two (2) of whom shall be members of the same political party.

Promotes the efficiency and effectiveness of the Members by jointly serving as the Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan (PIHP) for Medicaid Specialty Behavioral Health Services for the region. Behavioral Health Services include services for persons with developmental disabilities, adults with mental illness, children with emotional disturbance and persons with substance use disorders. The Lakeshore Regional Entity seeks to build upon and maximize the unique strengths of the individual Member Boards serving Allegan, Kent, Lake, Mason, Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa Counties, while establishing a regional organization and identity that supports an essential standard for services. The Lakeshore Regional Entity will promote performance that supports and advocates for and is informed by the needs of the individuals the Entity serves across the region.

The Muskegon Land Bank Fast Track Authority was formed in 2006 to transform vacant, tax delinquent and abandoned property for the benefit of the surrounding property, to improve the community, stabilize the area, giving low income families the chance to own a home.
The Muskegon County Land Bank Fast Track Authority helps restore value to the community by acquiring, developing and selling vacant and abandoned properties in cooperation with stakeholders who value responsible land ownership.

Meetings are held at 4 PM on the 3rd Monday of each month.
Some duties the Library Board assists with include:
- Establishing, maintaining, and operating the public libraries for the district;
- Exclusively control the expenditure of money deposited into the district library fund
- Appoint and remove officers from among its members
- Appoint and remove a librarian and necessary assistants and fix their compensation
- Acquire real or personal property for use for library purposes by purchase, land contract, installment purchase contract, lease with or without option to purchase, or title retaining contract
- Supervise and control district library property
- Enter into a contract to receive library-related service from or give library-related service to a library or municipality within or without the district
- Adopt bylaws and regulations governing the board and the district library
- Propose and levy upon approval of the electors a tax for support of the district library
- Borrow money pursuant to the district library financing act
- Issue bonds pursuant to the district library financing act
- Accept gifts, grants, donations, and bequests for the district library

The Council meets 4 times per year beginning in January.
This Council will give guidance and support for the local Extension effort. It will be engaged in an ongoing process of identifying and prioritizing critical issues that fit within the MSUE mission and four Institutes (Agriculture and Agribusiness, Children and Youth, Nutrition and Health, and Greening Michigan.)

The County Museum Board promotes the establishment, maintenance and continuance of a historical and natural sciences museum, educational advancement of the public; acquires specimens, relics, mementos, documents or other articles of interest.

Parks Commissioners oversee the strategic planning and direction of the Parks Department, which may include:
- Prioritization of parks development and maintenance planning projects
- Review and discussion of the Muskegon County 5-Year Recreation Plan (due April 1, 2025)
- Review of future land acquisition for the County Parks system
- Review and participation in the Dune Harbor Park Master Planning process
- Overall funding for the County Parks system that will expand on the current funding sources, which are user fees and state DNR grants
- Parks Commissioners do not participate in the daily operation of the Parks

Members of the Muskegon County Public Health Advisory Committee advocate and advise on public health matters and makes recommendations to the Muskegon County Board of commissioners, County Administrator and the Public Health Director. The Committee may also obtain citizen input regarding public health issues; review program proposals and reports developed by the department; review proposed policies and regulations prior to Board adoption; serve as a citizen advocacy group for public health programs; inform citizens about programs and services; and establish partnerships and build community consensus and support around common public health goals.

The Remonumentation Peer Review group will act as a panel of surveyors to review and provide advice on original public land survey corners or protracted public land survey corners presented by surveyors before the county accepts them for filing under its county plan. Members must be professional surveyors recognized in the State of Michigan.

The Board is comprised of five commissioners appointed by the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners and provides the organizational direction and policy guidance for the Road Commission.

The Senior Activities Committee serves in an advisory capacity to the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners and makes recommendations relative to the expenditure of funds collected pursuant to the Activities or Services for Older Persons Act, Public Act 39 of 1976, as amended, including the appropriation of funds to public or private nonprofit corporations or organizations for the purposes of planning, coordinating, evaluating, and providing services to older persons. The Committee may also obtain citizen input regarding issues facing older persons, review program proposals and reports, recommend strategies and draft guidelines around common goals in providing services and activities for older persons throughout Muskegon County.

The Solid Waste Planning Committee oversees the county solid waste plan and approves any modification to landfill sites, new transfer stations or new landfill sites. The makeup is described in the MDEQ Solid Waste Rules Part 115 and it is composed of county government officials, local government officials, solid waste industry employees, industrial waste generators, environmental interest groups, general public, and solid waste planning personnel.

The Sustainability Committee is charged with researching opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of the County of Muskegon activities when possible, practical, and efficient and making recommendations to the Board of Commissioners and staff for consideration and implementation.

Meetings are held monthly and are scheduled by the Committee.
The Committee’s mission is to provide advisory recommendations regarding Veterans Affairs matters to the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners, and to review and approve requests brought to the Committee through the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Committee and other funds where the Director have concerns.

The review board generally meets three times per year.
This Board was established by the Department of Natural Resources under the Natural Rivers Part 305, 1994 PA 451 in order to guide development in a manner that will protect the natural features of the river system. The review board is responsible for acting on requests for variances and special use permits.
