Getting a Public Defender

Process Explanation

When you appear before a judge or magistrate for the fist time, you will be informed as to which crime you have been charged with as well as the maximum penalty for the offense. The judge also sets bond and will advise you of your right to have an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney you will be referred to a public defender to represent you.

You may also request a public defender at your first court appearance.

If you still have questions and need to speak to an attorney, please call the Public Defender's Office at (231) 724-6585.
