ABOUT MUSKEGON COUNTY'S FAMILY COURT
Prosecutor D.J. Hilson's Office holds juveniles accountable for their actions while protecting children from abuse and neglect in Muskegon County's Family Court. Our Assistant Prosecutors work to provide local youth with the resources they need to be happy, healthy, and safe.
COMMITMENT
The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office values its juvenile court responsibilities and is committed to serving the citizens of Muskegon County in these areas for the future.
Per year, the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office managed around 700 juvenile delinquency cases, including felonies like homicides and armed robberies. The office has pushed for minors involved in serious offenses to be transferred to adult court. Juvenile delinquency cases are for offenders under the age of 18 years.
In the Family Court Division, the Prosecutor's Office plays a central role in protecting children from abuse and neglect. When an allegation of parental or adult abuse against a child is registered, the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office steps in as a legal advocate on behalf of the victimized child. The office promptly reviews and approves petitions, informing the court and the suspect of the allegations.
While abuse or neglect of a child can take many forms, common allegations are physical assaults on the child and failure to provide adequate food and shelter for the minor. Sexual abuse within the family is also an all-too-common basis for the pursuit of a child abuse petition.
Following an admission of wrongdoing or a finding of responsibility, the court can consider options like counseling, foster care placement, or termination of parental rights in severe cases. The Prosecutor's Office evaluates and recommends the best course of action, with Prosecutor Hilson prioritizing the protection of youth.
